Hawaii’s Picture Brides

Most of my friends from Asia often ask me exactly what Asian studies entails, but in particular, one of my closest Japanese friends and I have routine conversations about some of the topics we discussed in class. It was during a lecture of East Asian Immigrants to North America, that the topic of Picture Brides was introduced and while speaking with my close friend she told me about her great- grandmother, who was one.

She didn't recall much about her grandmother and wished that she had recorded some of the stories that she told her as a younger girl, and admittedly had little knowledge about Hawaii's picture brides, but suggested a book as a starting point of reference. She read me a eulogy of her late grandmother, that same day, which really motivated me to dive deeper into the topic:
